The Vision & Mission

At Mergify, our vision is simple: we want to make CI/CD work for developers—not against them.

We’re building the default CI companion—an intelligent, developer-first platform that helps engineering teams merge code faster, with confidence, and without friction.

Today, CI/CD often creates bottlenecks, confusion, and noise. Developers waste time on flaky tests, unclear failures, and repetitive tasks. We believe in a better way. Our mission is to eliminate that frustration by giving teams control, visibility, and automation where they need it most: at the heart of their software delivery process.

By empowering teams to focus on value—not plumbing—we help them ship faster, stay in flow, and turn CI from a pain point into a strength.

The Origin Story

Mergify started with a simple problem: why is merging code still such a hassle?

Back in 2018, Julien Danjou and Mehdi Abaakouk—longtime open-source contributors and infrastructure experts—were frustrated by how much time developers spent managing pull requests, flaky tests, and CI failures. So they built a small automation tool to help their own teams. It quickly struck a chord. What began as a side project turned into a product, then into a company.

Since then, Mergify has evolved from a GitHub bot into a powerful platform used by thousands of developers around the world. We’re still customer-funded, open-source-minded, and obsessed with solving real problems for real engineers.

The Team

We’re a small, passionate team of builders, developers, tinkerers, and problem-solvers. We work remotely across Europe, connected by a shared love for clean code, thoughtful design, and the satisfaction of solving hard problems for other engineers. What unites us are our values:

Openness & Ownership

Everyone at Mergify has a voice and the autonomy to make things happen. We take responsibility for what we build, and we’re not afraid to question how things are done.

Efficiency & Simplicity

We aim for boring solutions, avoid unnecessary complexity, and ship iteratively. We care more about what works than what’s shiny.

Collaboration & Communication

We embrace asynchronous work and default to transparency. We believe good ideas can come from anywhere—and that context is key to good decisions.

Inclusion & Well-being

We know great work happens when people feel safe, trusted, and respected. Flexibility, balance, and psychological safety matter. We meet quarterly for retreats, cook together, debate ideas, and have fun along the way.

Julien Danjou

Founder & CEO

Julien is the kind of person who writes Python books, builds open-source projects that end up on Mars, runs a startup, smokes meat like a pitmaster, crushes half-marathons 🏃, ranks in the top 1% of FPS players and still finds time to launch a podcast and invest in devtools startups. A true hacker, he’s been shaping the open-source world since becoming the youngest Debian dev in 2002, with deep contributions to Emacs, Python, OpenStack, and beyond. These days, he’s building the future of CI/CD while occasionally dropping music tracks and perfecting his Neapolitan pizza game 🍕 in Toulouse. If there’s a limit to what Julien can do, we haven’t found it yet.

Erwan Simonetti

Software Engineer

Erwan, a.k.a. Yves 🎸✨, is our resident code-slinger by day and riff-shredder by night—seriously, if GitHub had a distortion pedal, he’d be soloing commits. When he’s not untangling CI pipelines with surgical precision, he’s summoning guitar gods with the same fingers he uses to squash bugs. His legendary nickname even earned its own custom emoji, because ordinary text can’t capture Yves-level energy.

Mehdi Abaakouk

Founder & CTO

Mehdi, our swing-dancing powerhouse from Toulouse 💃💻, brings rhythm not only to the dance floor but also to our architecture. A lifelong open-source contributor with serious technical chops, he’s left his mark on major projects like OpenStack, Python, and Ceph—basically, if it runs on servers and matters, Mehdi’s probably been in its Git history. From bootstrapping startups to scaling systems like a pro, he’s the rare kind of engineer who moves gracefully through both code and chaos.

Guillaume Risbourg

Software Engineer

Guillaume is the kind of teammate who thrives both on the frontlines and deep in the engine room. Whether he’s delighting users with top-tier support responses or disappearing into the depths of our codebase to refactor the test suite or craft some intricate internal wizardry, he does it all with calm precision. Basically, if Mergify were a spaceship, Guillaume would be both the friendly voice on comms and the one rerouting power through the warp core without blinking. 🧑‍🚀🛠️💬

Fabien, our favorite Marseillais 🇲🇫🛥️ and newly crowned SQL sorcerer, brings sunshine, swagger, and subqueries to the team. Whether he’s optimizing joins or passionately explaining why Marseille is objectively the best city in France, he does it with flair. If there’s a complex query to crack or a baguette to defend, Fabien’s your guy—just don’t challenge him on indexes or football.

Software Engineer

Alexandre is our frontend wizard from Brittany 🐕💪, turning wild Figma dreams into pixel-perfect TypeScript reality like it’s just leg day. When he’s not bending CSS to his will or crafting slick UI that makes our users swoon, he’s either hanging out with his beloved dogs or lifting something heavier than your average webpack config. Strong code, strong biceps—Alex delivers both.

We’ve worked remotely since day one—not because it’s trendy, but because it’s how we’ve always worked best. Coming from open-source communities, we’re used to async collaboration, written communication, and getting things done without being in the same room.

Our team is spread across Europe, and that’s a strength. We organize our work around flexibility, not fixed hours. We trust each other to take ownership, communicate openly, and show up when it matters.

We also know remote work can be isolating, so we make space to connect—whether it’s casual chats, quarterly retreats, or just sharing what we’re cooking for dinner. Balance matters. So does having fun.
